Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly was understandably frustrated after the Fighting Irish's 38-35 upset loss to Duke on Saturday, dropping the the team to 1-3.

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly, right, walks away from Duke head coach David Cutcliffe after their handshake after an NCAA college football game Saturday.

After lashing out at the team's coaching following last week's loss to Michigan State, Kelly said every player's position is up for grabs and took aim at their energy — or lack thereof rather.

“They can't burn for a long time. There's no passion," Kelly told news reporters. "There's no passion for it. It looks like it's hard to play. Like we're pulling teeth. You're playing football for Notre Dame. It looks like it's work. Last I checked they were getting a scholarship to play this game. There's no fun, there's no enjoyment, there's no energy. We've got to look for the guys that want to have fun and play this game with passion and energy and that's where we got to go.”

When pressed what went into the lack of energy, Kelly said: “I must be doing a poor job. I've got to do a better job of finding out what those things are that are putting our football team in that position. But we got to have more of it.”

The Irish are allowing 30 points a game, and the Blue Devils had 498 total yards of offense against them. Notre Dame hits the road now starting with a game at Syracuse next week.

"There are things that I want to get better at defensively, there's no question. But that's the least of my concerns after today," Kelly said.
