Amway Coaches Poll stock watch: Washington, Texas A&M rise after wins

Week 5 in college football was one that kept cardiologists around the country busy. The array of crazy finishes and high-profiles matchups produced plenty of shuffling in the Amway Coaches Poll.

The very top remains largely the same, with Alabama and Ohio State continuing to hold down the No. 1 and 2 rankings. The Crimson Tide received 57 of the 62 first-place votes cast this week, with the Buckeyes claiming three.

No. 3 Clemson grabbed the remaining two firsts after holding on in a wild contest against then-No. 4 Louisville. Michigan, which won a hard-hitting top-10 showdown of its own against Wisconsin, climbed to No. 4 and Houston rounds out the top 5.

The biggest risers among the top 10 were Washington and Texas A&M. Each moved up three spots to No. 6 and No. 7, respectively.

Five new or returning squads enter the top 25 this week, including the first ever appearance for No. 25 Western Michigan since USA TODAY began administering the coaches poll in 1992.

Stock up: Washington. The Huskies’ huge win against Stanford Friday night vaulted them into the midst of the College Football Playoff discussion.

Stock down: Stanford. On the short end of that result, the Cardinal took a nine-place hit to No. 15.

Stock up: North Carolina. The Tar Heels made the biggest jump within the poll, a seven-spot gain to No. 16, following their last-second win at Florida State.

Stock down: Wisconsin. The Badgers’ loss to Michigan wasn’t a season killer by any means, but they did fall five places to No. 13.

Stock up: Tennessee. The Vols’ miraculous finish at Georgia earned them the No. 9 slot, their highest ranking since the 2006 season, on the eve of yet another huge tilt with No. 7 Texas A&M.

Stock down: Florida State. The Seminoles dropped their second game of the season and fell nine slots to No. 21. Things don’t get any easier for FSU with No. 10 Miami on deck.

New kids on the block: No. 19 Boise State, No. 20 West Virginia, No. 22 Oklahoma, No. 23 Colorado, No. 25 Western Michigan.

College dropouts: Michigan State, TCU, Georgia, San Diego State, Texas.
