Bulls' Rajon Rondo says he won't play in Game 5 Wednesday vs. Celtics

Injured Chicago Bulls' Rajon Rondo watches his team from the bench during the first half in Game 4 of an NBA basketball first-round playoff series against the Boston Celtics.

Injured Chicago Bulls point guard Rajon Rondo told reporters at shootaround Wednesday morning that he won't be able to play in Game 5 against the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night. His status for Friday's Game 6 — and Sunday's Game 7, should it be necessary — is still up in the air.

Rondo missed Games 3 and 4 with a broken right thumb. He considered playing in Game 5, but the injury hasn't healed enough for him to give it a go.

Rondo was integral to the Bulls’ first two victories to go up 2-0 in the series, but Chicago's offense has since been stymied as Jerian Grant and Michael Carter-Williams have assumed point guard responsibilities. Isaiah Canaan is slated to start Game 5 at point guard, marking the Bulls’ third starting point guard of the series.

Before his 13 points in 34 minutes in Game 4, Canaan hadn’t played more than seven minutes in a game since the All-Star break.

The series is tied 2-2 after the Celtics won both games in Chicago, wresting back homecourt advantage.

Aside from the injured thumb, Rondo has also been dealing with a lingering right wrist injury. He has removed the hard cast that had encased his wrist and took jumpers on Tuesday. The cast wasn't related to his thumb injury, but he was wearing a splint.
