Cleveland Cavs close to adding Atlanta Hawks' Kyle Korver

Cleveland is finalizing a deal to acquire shooting guard Kyle Korver from the Atlanta Hawks, a person familiar with the deal told USA TODAY Sports.

The person requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly until the deal is official.

In return, the Cavs are sending a 2019 protected first-round pick and small forward Mike Dunleavy to the Hawks. The deal is not finalized and Dunleavy could land elsewhere.

Adding Korver gives Cleveland more three-point shooting, a player who can help compensate for the missing threes from injured guard J.R. Smith, who isn’t expected to return from a fractured thumb, and adds depth to an injury-depleted roster.

With the Cavs, Korver will have even more space to shoot threes, and he’s an accurate shooter with space. He’s shooting 45.3% on open threes (no defender within four feet) and shooting 43.3% on catch-and-shoot threes this season.

Putting Korver on the floor with LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, Kevin and Love and Channing Frye gives Cleveland even more offensive firepower.

The Cavs are second in the league in three-point shooting percentage (39.1%) and second in made threes per game (12.9).

Korver, 35, struggled at times earlier this season with his shot and was moved from the starting lineup to the bench. In 11 games as a reserve, Korver has played the same minutes as he did as a starter but is averaging three more points (11.5) and shooting 43.3% on three-pointers – better than the 39.1% as a starter. He’s also taking more threes per game as a reserve.

Korver is in the final year of a 4-year, $24 million contract.

Yahoo's The Vertical first reported the deal.
