A big game from John Diener, plus steady play from everyone else, gave the Cedarburg boys basketball team an 80-57 triumph over Milwaukee Lutheran on Dec. 9.

Diener poured in 36 points in only 30 minutes of action, including 26 points in the first half to pace the Bulldogs to a 49-28 halftime lead. He hit five 3-point field goals and went 10-for-10 at the free-throw line on the evening.

"He was on fire all night," said coach Tom Diener, whose team improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the North Shore Conference.

Other Cedarburg players certainly stepped up as well, with Jordan Johnson scoring 17 points and Matt Barber 11 points. Johnson was also perfect at the line (4-of-4) for the Bulldogs, who netted 20-of-24 on the evening.

"Matt Barber played perhaps the game of his career," coach Diener said. "His defense was impeccable, and he made no mistakes from start to finish."

Coach Diener also praised Johnson, Jared Short and Clayton Van Tassel for their senior leadership.

Cedarburg also topped West DePere, 57-42, on Dec. 6 behind a balanced attack. Johnson led the way with 15 points, Diener put in 13 points, Short 11 and Van Tassel 8 points.

"Van Tassel and Short were able to knock down some threes, which really put a great deal of pressure on West DePere's defense," the coach said. "Victor Novy and Mitchell Stroebel gave us some strong minutes off the bench. Stroebel is becoming a very good defensive player."

He also credited John Diener and Johnson for getting teammates involved in the offense and not taking bad shots.

Cedarburg continues North Shore Conference play at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at Nicolet.
