The season opened on a strong note for the Grafton and Cedarburg boys swimming and diving teams in the Nicolet Sprints.
The Black Hawks tallied 229 points for third place in the 14-team meet on Dec. 3 and the Bulldogs came in sixth with 192 points.
Senior Sean O'Connor of Grafton claimed a pair of individual crowns, winning the 200-yard freestyle with 1 minute, 44.09 seconds and the 50 butterfly at 23.42 seconds.
Hobbs gets seconds
For Cedarburg, senior Will Hobbs captured a couple of second places in the 50 freestyle (22.04) and the 100 freestyle with 48.44. Sophomore Garrett Gonwa also took second in the diving (337.75 points).
The Grafton 500 freestyle relay team also came in second (3:56.48), and team names were not available.
The Hawks also snared a trio of third places: senior Jake Herlache in the 100 freestyle (49.98), sophomore Nick Starr in the 200 individual medley (2:05.99) and senior Jack Senczynszyn in the 50 breaststroke (29.19).
Grafton also notched fourth places in the 50 backstroke with senior Charley Hanney (27.7) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:37.97). Cedarburg senior Jimmy Radtke was fourth in the 50 breaststroke (29.72).
For Grafton, senior Harry Niswonger was fifth in diving (281.8 points) and was followed by freshman Ben Niswonger in sixth (281.05).
Earning fifth for the Bulldogs were the 400 medley squad (3:38.8), the 200 freestyle relay team (1:38.3) and the 500 freestyle unit (4:06.48).
Taking sixth were senior Owen Carr of Cedarburg in the 200 freestyle (1:52.68) and Herlache of Grafton in the 50 backstroke (27.84).
Starr of Grafton was eighth in the 50 breaststrroke (29.96) and senior Josh Bote of Cedarburg ninth in the 200 IM (2:15.03). Carr of Cedarburg came in 10th in the 50 butterfly (25.74), and Hanney of Grafton took 11th in the 100 IM (59.93).
Senczynszyn of Grafton was 12th in the 100 IM (1:01.76), and senior Cole Felmer of Cedarburg finished 13th in the 50 breaststroke (31.94).
Senior Evan Geiser of Cedarburg took 14th in the 100 freestyle (53.96) and 15th in the 200 freestyle (1:59.4). Bote of Cedarburg claimed 15th in the 100 IM (1:02.2).
Finishing 16th were senior Kevin Glomski of Cedarburg in the 200 freestyle (2:00.41) and senior Jake Rohman of Cedarburg in the 50 breaststroke (32.67).
State swimmers back
The Bulldogs return WIAA state qualifiers Hobbs, Carr, Geiser, Glomski, Bote and Radtke, along with Gonwa, Felmer, Rohman, senior Tyler Grissom in freestyle and junior Kaleb Kaiser in the butterfly.
"We hope to compete for a conference title again this season," Cedarburg coach Amit Kaul said. "We host conference relays on Tuesday, Dec. 20, and look forward to the opportunity."
