The return of eight seniors, including all-North Shore Conference first-team player Amanda Baierl, will boost the Port Washington girls basketball team this season.
Baierl, a 6-foot senior forward, averaged a team-high 17 points and nine rebounds last season for the Pirates, who went 7-17 overall and 4-10 in the North Shore.
Other key returnees include 5-6 senior guard Ann Nuedling (7.8 points per game), 5-8 senior guard Karley Lehtikangas (6.1 average), 5-9 senior forward Haley Erlandson (5.1) and 5-8 senior guard/forward Lillie Cook.
Baierl, Nuedling, Lehtikangas and Erlandson were the top four scorers for the Pirates last season.
The other seniors are 5-10 guard/forward Kendra Strohm, 5-8 guard Grace Wieland and 5-11 forward Sarah Volesky.
"Those eight seniors gained a lot of experience over the last couple of years," head coach Jake Wahl said. "We will be strong defensively and will look for a more balanced offense."
Wahl said Germantown, Cedarburg and Homestead will be the favorites in the conference this season.
The Pirates will start the season at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, at Ozaukee. They will then play at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, at Sheboygan North.
Their first home game, and the North Shore opener, will be 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, against Nicolet.
