WEST ALLIS — The main Zoo Interchange construction-related hangups for those driving the freeway system to the Wisconsin State Fair this year affect those coming from the west and the north.

Drivers headed in from the west on Interstate 94 will find that the 84th Street off-ramp is closed. Highway officials recommend exiting instead at highway 100. Then drivers can make their way north on highway 100 to Blue Mound Road, which they can take east to the fair at 84th Street.

Drivers coming in from the north won't be able to exit I-41/894 at Greenfield Avenue, but they do have a couple of choices. One is to get off at Blue Mound Road and take that east to 84th Street and head a short distance south to the fair. The other choice is to exit southbound I-41 onto eastbound I-94 and get off at 70th Street. Then drivers can make their way to the fair's eastern entrance at 76th Street.

The 84th Street off-ramp being closed to drivers coming from the west will actually help those coming from the east because they can still can get off I-94 at 84th Street. They will find a lot less crowding on 84th, officials predict. Some drivers who usually exit at 68th Street to avoid slow traffic at 84th may actually find it more convenient this year to exit at 84th, instead, officials said.

Drivers coming from the south will not be affected as they drive to the fair. They will still be able to exit I-41/894 northbound onto I-94 eastbound and get off at 84th Street.

Getting home

However, getting home from the fair will be tougher for them as well as for those wanting to head west on I-94.

Those who usually take I-894 north to the fair won't be able to get onto the freeway to go back south until National Avenue. That's because the I-94 westbound ramp going to southbound I-894 is still closed.

So, by taking 84th Street south from the fair to National Avenue, drivers can turn west onto National to link up with the freeway, highway officials said.

Drivers wanting to head west face a different problem. The I-94 westbound on-ramp at 84th Street is closed, except for those wanting to link up with northbound I-41.

So, highway officials recommend circling back east to 70th Street and getting onto westbound I-94 there. The only other alternative is getting on at Moorland Road. Both Greenfield Avenue and Blue Mound Road will take drivers from the fair west to Moorland Road.
