Want some beer with your pet food?
Fromm Family Foods has proposed a new project in Mequon to include dog food and a microbrewery in the same building.
The development is proposed for the southeast corner of Commerce Drive and Executive Drive in Mequon's Business Park. The building would be 105,000 square feet and is planned for manufacturing, warehouse distribution, and a microbrewery.
No action was taken on the project, called the biggest industrial development in a decade by Commissioner Brian Parrish. However, it's expected to come back to the plan commission next month, according to Mayor Dan Abendroth.
The building was designed to follow the curves in the road to break up the typical warehouse appearance. It would be constructed mainly of precast material and would be 35 feet high.
"The architect did a nice job breaking up the mass," said Jac Zader, Mequon's assistant director of community development, at the Oct. 10 plan commission meeting.
Commissioner Martin Choren agreed, saying the developer "did a good job breaking it up."
The microbrewery, called Fox Town Brewery, would take up half the building with brewing space, office space, and a tasting area -- typical of microbreweries.
Fromm Family Foods is a fifth-generation artisan pet food company that has been creating artisan pet food since 1904, according to its website. Being a pet food manufacturer, some were concerned with the manufacturing smell being in such close proximity to a microbrewery.
Worries were put to rest at the meeting as it was discussed that no manufacturing of pet food will take place on-site but it would be used for storing some food and distributing it.
In between the two separate parts of the business would be a shared 7,000 square-foot atrium where the employees from both sides of the building could socialize.
Alderman Robert Strzelczyk said it meant a lot to find local investors for the location.
"This building is a step up in the industrial area," he said.
