It may seem too early to think about taking a dip at the pool, but Cedarburg residents will have something extra to look forward to when they visit the pool this summer.
The Cedarburg Common Council approved the operation of a mobile beer garden for four Saturdays this summer at the community pool starting May 22. The beer garden will be operated by the Stilt House Gastro Bar in partnership with the Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry and the non-profit Friends of Parks and Rec.
The city has been working for several months on the future of funding for maintenance and upkeep of the pool. Last month, the common council terminated the agreement between the city and town of Cedarburg regarding its funding of the pool, which means that town residents will now have to pay non-resident rates for use of the pool
According to Mikko Hilvo, director of parks and recreation for the city, revenue from the beer garden will be shared between the parks department and Friends of Parks and Rec for pool maintenance and construction of a playground adjacent to the pool.
"The revenue will not have an enormous major impact towards pool funding, but it will be helpful," said Hilvo. "I think that visitors to the pool will be very excited this summer to have the beer garden there. Plus, we will also have a visit by the "Traveling Sauna" during one of the Saturdays, so people should look out for that, too."
Gordon Goggin, co-owner of the Stilt House, looks forward to operating the beer garden at the Cedarburg pool, having previous experience with beer gardens in other communities through his work with Sprecher Brewery.
"We will provide kegs, taps, a bar section, and a tent at the pool. The only thing we will need is people, and I'm sure they will be there enjoying our presence at the pool this summer," said Goggin.
