Mequon — The majority of the structure for the addition is complete, a portion of the office area has been renovated and offices will soon move to accommodate further completion of what will become the new public works facility in Mequon.
Completion is slated for May for the project, which will consolidate operations of Mequon’s three public works facilities into an existing city building at 10800 Industrial Drive.
By building a 40,000-square-foot addition onto the existing Industrial Drive building, the city will bring all public works operations under one roof in a facility that is projected to meet the city's needs for the next 40 years.
“We will move our offices to that location (soon) so that the contractor can complete the office renovation and begin the garage renovation,” said Public Works Director Kristen Lundeen.
The common council last March approved a construction contract and borrowing $8.9 million for the project.
“We have been very happy with the process,” Lundeen said. “The prime contractor, SMA Construction, has been good to work with and very accommodating as we have to both work and complete the building addition on the same site.”
Construction began last spring on the building, which houses the majority of public works operations, such as highway, parks and the administrative needs of the water utility.
In addition to the building expansion, a fueling station and salt dome will also be relocated to Industrial Drive. Office and shop areas area also being remodeled.
“As expected with any construction project, there have been some unanticipated items along the way,” Lundeen said. “We have been able to work through them with the contractor to ensure the best product for the city.”
Lundeen said the project is on budget, and that she expects the building will be ready to be fully occupied in May.
A facilities assessment study conducted in 2013 concluded that combining operations at Industrial Drive would provide operational efficiencies and fewer expenses for facility operations and maintenance.
Mequon's public works operations are spread across three facilities: the Industrial Drive location, a facility on Green Bay Road and another building on Mequon Road, just east of the Mequon Police Department. The Mequon Road building is on the market as part of the Mequon Town Center redevelopment initiative.
