Area residents looking to improve their English writing skills or to reduce their accent can register for classes in English as a Second Language at MATC’s Mequon campus.

Registration and placement testing for the spring semester will be from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, Jan. 16, in Room A221. For evening classes, registration and placement testing will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, or Tuesday, Jan. 24. Classes begin the same week.

On registration days, placement testing will be conducted to determine students' English proficiency levels. Six different levels of ESL classes are offered. There are day and evening classes.

MATC will offer day classes from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Classes include Oral Communication (six levels), Reading and Writing (three levels), Pronunciation (two levels), and ESL Workshop, which includes computer-assisted instruction.

Evening classes run between 5 and 8 p.m., either Tuesday and Thursday, or Monday and Wednesday.

Costs are minimal for area residents, $11.75 for a semester course. If students are here on visas, the cost may be higher depending on the visa type. Parking is $25 per semester or $35 for two semesters. Each class requires a textbook, which can cost from $35 to $70.

The MATC campus is located at 5555 W. Highland Road in Mequon. For more information, call 262-238-2279.
