The Cedarburg Cultural Center will host Mequon artist Julia Nawrot for December as its artist in residence.
A native of Chile, Nawrot earned a full scholarship at Escuela Experimental de Educación Artística, a boarding school of the arts at the age of 12 in Santiago. She has participated in art shows since she was 13 years old, drawing and painting portraits, nature, doing botanical illustrations, and using a variety of media such as xylography, ink, charcoal, watercolor, acrylics and oil. While teaching ESL at Lincoln Middle School of the Arts in Milwaukee, she incorporated art, and Latin and Greek roots in the ESL curriculum.
Now retired, she is currently an active member of the CCC, Cedarburg Artists Guild and Cedarburg Art Museum. Her paintings are displayed in the Main Street Gallery inside the CCC, Washington Inn, Schroeder Guest House, Cedarburg Senior Center and at Cedarburg Art Museum gift shop.
Nawrot will be at the Center demonstrating her artwork on from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, Dec. 10 and 17. There is no charge to stop in and visit with Nawrot.
In addition, she will teach two workshops. From 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, she will lead “Coral Reef Collage Painting for Adults.” The class is intended for students ages 18 and older. The second workshop, which meets from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, is “Coral Reef Collage Painting for Teens/Tweens” and is intended for students ages 11-17. In both courses, students will work in acrylic paints on 4-by-4 canvases, and utilize actual seashells as collage elements. Supplies are included, but students are welcome to bring their own little treasures that have special meaning as well. The cost of either workshop is $30 for CCC members and $38 for non-members.
Details about the artist and her workshops and how to register may be found on the center’s website at cedarburgculturalcenter.org/artistinresidence.html or by calling 262-375-3676.
