The Larimer Humane Society on Monday removed 63 Chihuahuas from a home in the southern part of the county, the organization said in a release.

Scooby, a Chihuahua mix, wears a medical collar at the Animal House adoption facility Feb. 24, 2009. The Larimer Humane Society recently removed 63 Chihuahuas from an informal breeder in the county.

The profusion of pups was the result of an informal breeding operation that had become overwhelming to the owner, the release said.

The Chihuahuas were brought to the Humane Society's shelter for evaluation and vaccinations. About 50 of the dogs will be transferred to partner agencies including the Longmont Humane Society, Dumb Friends League, Denver Animal Shelter, Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region and Humane Society of Boulder Valley to be put up for adoption.

Larimer Humane Society provides animal control and protection services for the county. In May, it broke ground on a new taxpayer-funded facility near the Northern Colorado Regional Airport.
